Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes. Carl Jung (1875)
Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. Carl Jung (1875)
In this high place
it is as simple as this,
Leave everything you know behind.
Step toward the cold surface,
say the old prayer of rough love
and open both arms.
Those who come with empty hands
will stare into the lake astonished,
there, in the cold light
reflecting pure snow,
the true shape of your own face.
The force of necessity is irresistible. Aeschylus (525 B.C.E.)
A day, an hour, of virtuous liberty
Is worth a whole eternity in bondage.
Joseph Addison (1672)
Progress is the law of life; man is not man as yet. Robert Browning (1812)
People stop being children when they start laughing at their ignorance. Kyaciss Pfiell
Can't stop the thoughts arising and disappearing in your mind,
True awareness shining boundlessly, you must focus on the one that doesn't move,
To realize there are neither forms nor names, nothing to pursue,
Sword of Wisdom has been used, must hurry to hone it.
Lin Chi (810)
Whatever is not yours, abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
What is it that is not yours? Material form is not yours. Abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
Buddhism (500 B.C.E.)
Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. Dalai Lama (1935)
Right here, right now, in this moment, you don't have to 'figure out' the rest of your life, no matter what anyone says. In this moment, you don't need all the answers. They will come, in time, or not, or perhaps the unncecessary questions will fall away. . . . And so, instead of trying to 'fix' our lives, instead of trying to neatly resolve the unresolveable and quickly complete the epic story of a fictitious 'me,' we simply relax into utter not knowing, unravelling in the warm embrace of mystery, sinking deeply into the moment, savouring it fully, in all its uniqueness and wonder. Jeff Foster
To see what is in front of one's nose needs a constant struggle. George Orwell (1903)
What you are looking for is what is looking. St. Francis Of Assisi (1181)
Thoughts held in mind produce after their kind. Unity/New Thought (1889)
The stage is too big for the drama. Richard Feynman (1918)
Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. John Quincy Adams (1767)
When you deceive yourself that you work for the good of all, it makes matters worse, for you should not be guided by your own ideas of what is good for others. A man who claims to know what is good for others is dangerous. Nisargadatta (1897)
It's important to be heroic, ambitious, productive, efficient, creative, and progressive, but these qualities don't necessarily nurture soul. The soul has different concerns, of equal value: downtime for reflection, conversation, and reverie; beauty that is captivating and pleasuring; relatedness to the environs and to people; and any animal's rhythm of rest and activity. Thomas Moore (1940)
A life lived for tomorrow never comes, a life lived for yesterday never changes but a life lived for today is full of wonder, mystery and the choice to live happily ever after moment by moment. Jackson Kiddard (1902)
Patience child, patience. Remember, life is a journey. If you got everything you wanted all at once there'd be no point to living. Enjoy the ride, and in the end you'll see these "setbacks" as giant leaps forward, only you couldn't see the bigger picture in the moment. Remain calm, all is within reach; all you have to do is show up every day, stay true to your path and you will surely find the treasure you seek. Jackson Kiddard (1902)
The world is like a sheet of paper on which something is typed. The reading and the meaning will vary with the reader, but the paper is the common factor, always present, rarely perceived. When the ribbon is removed, typing leaves no trace on the paper. So is my mind - the impressions keep on coming, but no trace is left. Nisargadatta (1897)
The Man Watching
I can tell by the way the trees beat, after
so many dull days, on my worried windowpanes
that a storm is coming,
and I hear the far-off fields say things
I can't bear without a friend,
I can't love without a sister.
The storm, the shifter of shapes, drives on
across the woods and across time,
and the world looks as if it had no age:
the landscape like a line in the psalm book,
is seriousness and weight and eternity.
What we choose to fight is so tiny!
What fights with us is so great!
If only we would let ourselves be dominated
as things do by some immense storm,
we would become strong too, and not need names.
When we win it's with small things,
and the triumph itself makes us small.
What is extraordinary and eternal
does not want to be bent by us.
I mean the Angel who appeared
to the wrestlers of the Old Testament:
when the wrestlers' sinews
grew long like metal strings,
he felt them under his fingers
like chords of deep music.
Whoever was beaten by this Angel
(who often simply declined the fight)
went away proud and strengthened
and great from that harsh hand,
that kneaded him as if to change his shape.
Winning does not tempt that man.
This is how he grows: by being defeated, decisively,
by constantly greater beings.
Enlightenment is the understanding that this is all, that this is perfect, that this is it. Enlightenment is not an achievement, it is an understanding that there is nothing to achieve, nowhere to go. Osho (1931)
There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning. Louis L'Amour (1908)
When I look inside and see that I am nothing, that is wisdom. When I look outside and see that I am everything, that is love. And between these two, my life turns. Nisargadatta (1897)
"By waiting and by calm you shall be saved; in quiet and in trust your strength lies. "- Old Testament
"The center of every man's existence is a dream. Death, disease, and insanity are merely material accidents, like a toothache or a twisted ankle. That these brutal forces always besiege and often capture the citadel does not prove that they are the citadel. "- G. K. Chesterton
"Wisdom is so kind and wise that wherever you may look you can learn something about God. Why would not the omnipresent teach that way? "- St. Catherine Of Siena
"If God said 'Rumi pay homage to everything that has helped you enter my arms' There would not be one experience of my life, not one thought, not one feeling, not any act, I would not bow to. "- Jalal Al Din Rumi
"Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way. "- American Indian
""Is there anything that I can do to make myself enlightened?" "As little as you can do to make the sun rise in the morning." "Then of what use are the spiritual exercises you prescribe?" "To make sure you are not asleep when the sun begins to rise." "- Anthony De Mello
"If you persist in trying to attain what is never attained (It is Tao's Gift!), If you persist in making effort to obtain what effort cannot get, If you persist in reasoning about what cannot be understood, You will be destroyed by the very thing you seek. To know when to stop, To know when you can get no further by your own action, This is the right beginning! "- Thomas Merton
