How To Have The Love You Want

Some things never change. And one thing that hasn’t changed over the millennia is the utmost importance to us of our relationships with others — especially with our partners in life. Countless songs and novels speak of the glory and the heartache of love. Our own experiences with love, good or bad, are an endless source of fascination to us.

But what do we really understand about love? Do we understand what it is fundamentally about? How to be truly loving? Why relationships are so often a problem?

I was looking through the Living Book of quotations on the OneJourney site when I came upon this revealing observation by the Austrian lyric poet, Rainer Marie Rilke:

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926)

“For one human being to love another human being: that is perhaps the most difficult task that has been entrusted to us, the ultimate task, the final test and proof, the work for which all other work is merely preparation.” — Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926)

How much there is to see in these words. First, we think love should be easy, but Rilke tells us it is the most difficult task. And it is a task that’s been entrusted to us. To me that means that something greater than we are, some higher power, has given us this task to fulfill Its purposes for the perfection of both ourselves as individuals, and of mankind.

And everything we’ve done in life to develop ourselves has merely been preparation for the ultimate work of being able to love truly.

For Rilke, the love between two people goes beyond those two people in its significance. Only a love of that nature can bring us the fulfillment we yearn for. His powerful words inspire us to become worthy of the love we want. But how?

If this question interests you, you should know that OneJourney founder Guy Finley has helped individuals discover the true meaning of love, and how to awaken it, for over 40 years.

“The true purpose of all our relationships in life is to help us and to help each other outgrow whatever stands in the way of perfecting our love for one another.” — Guy Finley (1949)
