We have lost sight of the original harmony. If you could hear the sound that is produced by the sunflower as it keeps on turning its head toward the sun, the friction between the flower and the air, and if you could hear the sound produced by the galaxies, you would hear and realize that the system is based upon a basic harmony, the harmony of the spheres.
Holiness is what is loved by all the gods. It is loved because it is holy, and not holy because it is loved.
Light is the shadow of God.
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark. The real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.
Peter of Damascus assures us that “nothing is better than to realize one’s weakness and ignorance, and nothing is worse than not to be aware of them.”
Because every thought enters the heart in the form of a mental image of some sensible object, the blessed light of the Divinity will illumine the heart only when it is completely empty of everything, and so free from all form. God hath framed the mind of man as a mirror of glass, capable of the image of the universal world, and joyful to receive the impression thereof, as the eye joyeth to receive light.
For God grants wisdom from His mouth together with perception and practical wisdom, and stores up help for the righteous.
The burden which is well borne becomes light.
To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.

Once you start to awaken, no one can ever claim you again for the old patterns. Now you realize how precious your time here is. You are no longer willing to squander your essence on undertakings that do not nourish your true self. Your patience grows thin with tired talk and dead language. You see through the rosters of expectation which promise you safety and the confirmation of your outer identity. Now you are impatient for growth, willing to put yourself in the way of change. You want your work to become an expression of your gift. You want your relationship to voyage beyond the pallid frontiers to where the danger of transformation dwells. You want your God to be wild and to call you to where your destiny awaits.
The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair.
When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds. Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.
What guarantee is there that the five senses, taken together, do cover the whole of possible existence? They cover simply our actual experience, our human knowledge of facts or events. There are gaps between the fingers; there are gaps between the senses. In these gaps is the darkness which hides the connection between things… this darkness is the source of our vague fear and anxiety, but also the home of the gods. They alone see the connections, the total relevance of everything that happens; that which now comes to us in bits and pieces, the accidents which exist only in our heads, in our limited perceptions.
The divine and conceptual scriptures are compared with dew, with water, with milk, with wine, and with honey, for they have the power like water to produce life, like milk to give growth, like vine to revive, like honey both to purify and preserve.
If three people meet and one of them is keeping inner peace, the second is giving thanks to God in sickness, the third is serving others from an unselfish motive, those three are performing the same work.
Humankind cannot bear very much reality.
Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future. And time future contained in time past.
