Despite the many differences that seem to exist between peoples the world over — regardless of culture, tradition, environment, or heredity — there is but one seeker, one search, and one sacred object of our desire. The celestial source of this sacred being doesn’t just live within us… we are, in fact, one with it.
God must act and pour himself into you the moment He finds you ready. Don’t imagine that God can be compared to an earthly carpenter, who acts or doesn’t act, as he wishes… who can will to do something or leave it undone, according to his pleasure. It is not that way with God: where and when God finds you ready, He must act and overflow into you, just as when the air is clear and pure, the sun must overflow into it and cannot refrain from doing that.
It is not necessary to think of revelation as a source of knowledge which is either contrary to reason or above reason… On the contrary it would not be difficult to show that the true idea of revelation, that which is most honoring to God, is at the same time that which is most ennobling to man — the idea, that is, of a revelation which addresses itself not to the ear or the logical understanding only, but to the whole spiritual nature.
We have no right to believe that our ordinary level of consciousness is the highest form of consciousness, or the sole mode of experience possible to man. We cannot say that the range of the internal experience of oneself is necessarily limited either to dream-states or to ordinary consciousness. We have to consider the possibility, not only that there is a level above our ordinary level of consciousness, to which we are only occasionally awakened, but that our ordinary consciousness becomes integrated into a larger system when this happens.
Waves broke. Awareness rose again and sent out a voice. It always happens like this. Sea turns on itself and foams. With every foaming bit another body, another being takes form. And when the sea sends word, each foaming body melts immediately back to ocean breath.
Then he realized, I indeed, I am this creation, for I have poured it forth from myself. In that way he became this creation. Verily, he who knows this becomes in this creation a creator.
I find the doing of the will of God leaves me no time for disputing about His plans.
The Man Watching
I can tell by the way the trees beat, after
so many dull days, on my worried windowpanes
that a storm is coming,
and I hear the far-off fields say things
I can’t bear without a friend,
I can’t love without a sister.
The storm, the shifter of shapes, drives on
across the woods and across time,
and the world looks as if it had no age:
the landscape like a line in the psalm book,
is seriousness and weight and eternity.
What we choose to fight is so tiny!
What fights with us is so great!
If only we would let ourselves be dominated
as things do by some immense storm,
we would become strong too, and not need names.
When we win it’s with small things,
and the triumph itself makes us small.
What is extraordinary and eternal
does not want to be bent by us.
I mean the Angel who appeared
to the wrestlers of the Old Testament:
when the wrestlers’ sinews
grew long like metal strings,
he felt them under his fingers
like chords of deep music.
Whoever was beaten by this Angel
(who often simply declined the fight)
went away proud and strengthened
and great from that harsh hand,
that kneaded him as if to change his shape.
Winning does not tempt that man.
This is how he grows: by being defeated, decisively,
by constantly greater beings.
Love is not an art like poetry, possible only to the few endowed for it, it is open and accessible to all.
More radiant than the sun, purer than the snow, subtler than the ether, is the Self, the spirit within my heart. I am that Self, that Self am I.
Thus it is said if you know them and know yourself, your victory will not be imperiled. If you know Heaven and you know Earth, your victory can be complete.
The Void is that which stands right in the middle of “this” and “that.” The void is all inclusive, having no opposite. There is nothing which it excludes or opposes. It is a living void, because all forms come out of it and whoever realizes the void is filled with life and power and the love of all things.
Oh how the spell before my sight brings nature’s hidden ways to light. See! All things with each other blending, each to each its being lending, all on each in turn depending, heavenly ministers descending, and again to heaven ascending, floating, mingling, interweaving… Can the heart of man embrace Illimitable Nature?
A wise man is never less alone than when he is alone.
O Lord, I cannot plead my love of thee. I plead thy love of me, The shallow conduit hails the unfathomed sea.
God, the divine Principle of man, and man in God’s likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal. God is the parent mind and man is God’s spiritual offspring.
Don’t unstring the bow,
I am your four-feathered arrow
that has not been used yet.
I am a strong knifeblade word,
not some if or maybe,
dissolving in air.
I am sunlight slicing the dark.
Who made this night?
A forge deep in the earth-mud.
What is the body?
What is love?
What is hidden in our chests?
Let the beloved be a hat pulled down firmly on my head.
Or drawstrings pulled and tied around my chest.
Someone asks, “How does love have hands and feet?”
Love is the sprouting-bed for hands and feet!
Your father and mother were playing love games,
They came together, and you appeared!
Don’t ask what love can make or do!
Look at the colours of the world.
The riverwater moving in all rivers at once.
The truth that lives in Shams’ face.
There is nothing more flattering than the bare truth, boldly uttered. But, all the same, those who can bear it are the rare exceptions in human nature.
God loveth those who are pure. Naught in the Bayan and in the sight of God is more loved than purity and immaculate cleanliness… God desireth not to see, in the Dispensation of the Bayan, any soul deprived of joy and radiance.
He indeed desireth that under all conditions, all may be adorned with such purity, both inwardly and outwardly, that no repugnance may be caused even to themselves, how much less unto others.
The way of love is not a subtle argument.
The door there is devastation.
Birds make great sky-circles of their freedom. How do they learn it?
They fall, and falling, they’re given wings.
He who loves God cannot endeavor that God should love him in return.
Peace of mind produces right values,
right values produce right thoughts.
Right thoughts produce right actions
and right actions produce
work which will be a
for others to see
of the serenity
of it all.
The beauty of the world is Christ’s tender smile for us, coming through matter.
All insight, all revelation, all illumination, all love, all that is genuine, all that is real, lies in now — and in the attempt to find now we approach the inner precincts, the holiest part of life. For in time all things are seeking completion, but in now all things are complete.
So many things which once had distressed or revolted him — the speeches and pronouncements of the learned, their assertions and their prohibitions, their refusal to allow the universe to move — are seemed to him now merely ridiculous, non-existent, compared with the Majestic Reality, the flood of energy, which now revealed itself to him: omnipresent, unalterable in its truth, relentless in its development, untouchable in its serenity, maternal and unfailing in its protectiveness.
For the sake of this end there has been given to man the ability to elevate his understanding into the light in which the angels of heaven are, that he may see what he must will and must do.
