The Secret to a Life That Never Has a Dull Moment

We do so much to stave off the dreaded state of boredom.

And yet, as we know, every distraction we turn to eventually loses its glow and off we go seeking once more. We think maybe one more trip will do it. Or watching one more movie, eating one more pizza, playing one more video game. Trying to keep ourselves entertained is exhausting, isn’t it? And the rewards are so fleeting.

Of course, it’s natural to want to enjoy our lives. There’s nothing wrong with taking a trip, eating a fine meal, or playing a game of pickle ball. It’s just that none of that will ultimately satisfy the nagging desire within us for newness. It can’t answer a bottomless curiosity that compels us to experience more.

But from across the ages we’re told that there is one thing we can do that never grows old, never becomes boring, is evergreen. Best of all, it can be done in any and every moment, regardless of what is or isn’t happening around us.

That constantly life-renewing activity is staying as conscious as we can to catch the secrets and higher wisdom always being revealed. This search for the hidden meaning in each moment is what gives real flavor to life and makes it an ongoing adventure.

Even more important, this is what our lives are really all about.

Words From the Masters About a Life That Is Never Dull

If we take even a moment to look, it is obvious that life is a great miracle. But we miss it all because we walk through our days unaware. And that is the cause of all our boredom and dissatisfaction. By contrast, seeking higher understanding by consciously participating in that miracle as it unfolds moment to moment brings endless enchantment.

Here’s what the sages tell us:

Begin to search and dig in your own field for this pearl of eternity… and when you have found it you will know that all which you have sold or given away for it is as mere a nothing as a bubble upon the water. — William Law (1686 – 1761)

Whilst a man seeks good ends, he is strong by the whole strength of nature… The perception of this law of laws awakens in the mind a sentiment which we call the religious sentiment, and which makes our highest happiness. Wonderful is its power to charm and to command. It is a mountain air. — Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882)

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. — Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955)

Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement… get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed. — Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907 – 1972)

The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair. — Walker Percy (1916 – 1990)

Guy Finley (1949)

The only reason that ever you feel bored in life isn’t because you don’t have something fun or exciting to do; rather, it’s because you don’t know how to be your Self. — Guy Finley (1949 – )

More Insight Into Finding Life Fascinating

OneJourney founder Guy Finley has been helping people discover the wonder of life for many decades. Here’s one more of his quotes:

We cannot keep trying to “delight” ourselves, and develop ourselves – spiritually – at the same time, any more than we can have our cake and eat it too. But once we understand that the work of developing our soul is the only pleasure that never turns into some painful opposite… then our life becomes delightful to Heaven and earth, alike. — Guy Finley (1949 – )
