Hillel the Elder (circa 110 B.C.E. – 10 A.D.) was born according to tradition in Babylon. He was a Jewish religious leader, one of the most important figures in Jewish history. Hillel is renowned within Judaism as a sage and scholar. He is popularly known for his expression of the ethic of reciprocity, or the “Golden Rule.”
