Ram Dass (1931), born Richard Alpert, is an American spiritual teacher, former academic and clinical psychologist, and author of many books, including Be Here Now. In 1967 he traveled to India in search of truth, and while there he was given the name of Ram Dass, which means “servant of God.” During the 1970’s, Ram Dass was focused on teaching, writing, and working with foundations. In 1974 he founded a nonprofit educational and service organization focused on the spiritual well-being of society through education, media and community service programs. He continues to share his teachings through the internet and retreats.
