Alain-Rene Le Sage (1668 – 1747) was a French novelist and playwright. Although he was orphaned at the age of fourteen, he was able to obtain an education at a Jesuit college in Brittany. Later he continued his studies in Paris. He began his writing career by translating plays from Spanish, later writing numerous plays of his own. His best known novel, Gil Blas, was written over a twenty year span, and was influential in making the picaresque form popular in Europe.
