Ouida (1839 – 1908) was the pseudonym of the English author Maria Louise Rame. She grew up in a small, quiet town, later living in London until 1871. In 1874 she moved to Florence, Italy where she spent her remaining years. Ouida wrote over 40 works, including novels, short stories, and essays. She loved animals, dogs in particular. It is therefore fitting that her children’s book, A Dog of Flanders, has been very popular and remains a classic in certain parts of the world.
