The Internet has been buzzing with a quote attributed to British actor and comedian extraordinaire, John Cleese, of Monty Python fame:
“Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray.”
And then…he finishes (his statement) with the punch line: “Welcome back to 430 BC!”
It’s a telling commentary on the state of the world, all the way from 2,400 years ago (and probably long before that) until now.
When I first saw this, I couldn’t help but flash back to a friend of mine commenting, maybe 10 or 15 years ago, that he remembered (as he grew up in the 50’s) seeing the now all-too-familiar headline “Mideast Peace Talks Underway.” And we still see the same headline regularly today. Which just shows that nothing real has changed.
The message is clear, don’t you think? So let us be equally clear as well. Our future, as well as the future of our planet itself, depends on the actions we take when meeting truths such as these.
Faces and places may change, but the world’s proclivity towards fighting, and the pattern of fear that gives rise to this violence is unchanging. Hatred born of intolerance never ends. But, thankfully, this long-standing sad story need not be the only one.
Individuals like you and me can change things; we can make a real difference beginning with choosing to share right, bright, and true ideas.
