We all have negative reactions, probably multiple times every day. We spill coffee grounds on the counter. We’re already running late when we’re stuck in traffic. Then, here comes that snide remark from a coworker. By now we’re ready to blow up.
Multiply that by 8 billion people, and we can almost see the cloud of negativity hanging over humanity. But strange as it may seem, the reactions themselves are not the problem. They’re automatic, like kicking our leg when the doctor hits our knee with a rubber hammer.
The difference is, when the doctor hits our knee, we don’t get mad, and we don’t hang on to the feeling. By contrast, when unwanted events happen and we react, we hardly ever let go of anything. When the negative reaction comes, we identify with it. We claim it, name it, and hang on to it until it grows into something huge that we keep feeding by thinking about it. Not only do we suffer, and make others suffer as the negativity spills over onto them, but we lose a tremendous opportunity for inner growth – as this quote by Hindu philosopher Vivekananda explains:
Every reaction in the form of hatred or evil is so much loss to the mind; and every evil thought or deed or hatred, or any thought of reaction, if it is controlled, will be laid in our favor. It is not that we lose by thus restraining ourselves; we are gaining infinitely more than we suspect. Each time we suppress hatred, or a feeling of anger, it is so much good energy stored up in our favour; that piece of energy will be converted into the higher powers. — Vivekananda (1863-1902)
This means, if we can learn to recognize our negative reactions and do the work to not go along with them, not only do we stop hurting ourselves and others, but the energy we save can be used for our higher transformation. This kind of new self-command doesn’t come overnight. It takes self-observation and a willingness to let go of reactions we always thought were our essential nature. But once you realize you don’t want to go on with things as they are, you’ll realize there really is nothing more important for you to do.
Learning a New Way to Meet Our Negative Reactions Changes Everything
Join us for our free ongoing livestreamed talks by OneJourney founder Guy Finley, every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening.
Guy Finley says that not only is it possible for us to establish a “direct connection” with the Divine, but opening this line of communication is part of our purpose for being here on earth. The steps needed to create this order of spiritual alignment are the focus of Guy’s ongoing talks.
Guy explains that the key to developing a connection to the Divine lies in gaining control of where we place our attention. When we’re not aware, we’re easily dragged down into tormenting memories of the past, or worries about the future. Forging a link to the Divine requires keeping our attention in the present moment, which has been a keystone of Guy’s teachings for over 40 years.
Guy is known for his practical approach to spirituality, and at the end of each of Guy’s talks you will have specific practices to follow that will help you deepen your relationship with celestial forces.
