In recent years we’ve seen scientists solve amazing mysteries about how our bodies work, about new modes of energy, about new ways to communicate with one another, about the origins of the cosmos itself.
And yet, very little has advanced in how we understand ourselves. And so, if anything, humans have gone more “off the rails” in terms of anger, anxiety, and diminishing connection with one another.
Maybe we haven’t been devoting enough energy to solving the most important mystery of all. Who we are.
The expression “self-realization” refers to the process of solving this inner mystery, and since the beginning of time the great sages have said this is the highest goal of any human being. They tell us that achieving self-realization completely changes every aspect of our lives in ways we can’t even imagine now.
Here is a sampling of what has been said about this process of self-discovery over the millennia:
When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you dwell in poverty, and you are poverty. — Jesus Christ (circa 4 B.C.E. – 30 A.D.)
The very discovery of these hidden things is in itself a purifying experience! The soul needs to discover what is inside. The self nature needs to see what it really is, and what it is like, right to the very bottom. — Jeanne Guyon (1648 – 1717)
It is therefore exceedingly good and beneficial to us to discover this dark, disordered fire of the soul, because when rightly known and rightly dealt with, it can as well be the foundation of heaven. — William Law (1686 – 1761)
But where can man find the truth? If he seeks deep enough in himself he will find it revealed. Each man may know his own heart. He may send a ray of his intelligence into the depths of his soul and search its bottom; he may find it to be as infinitely deep as the sky above his head. He may find corals and pearls, or watch the monsters of the deep. If his thought is steady and unwavering, he may enter the innermost sanctuary of his own temple and see the goddess unveiled. Not everyone can penetrate into such depths, because the thought is easily led astray; but the strong and persistent searcher will penetrate veil after veil, until at the innermost center he discovers the germ of truth, which, awakened to consciousness, will grow into a sun that illuminates the whole of the interior world, wherein everything is contained. — Franz Hartmann (1838 – 1912)
There is only one problem on which all my existence, my peace and my happiness depend: to discover myself in discovering God. If I find Him, I will find myself, and if I find my true self, I will find Him. — Thomas Merton (1915 – 1968)
If we can see the wisdom in these revealing quotations, then it is clear that if we’re ever to find the better life of freedom, inner peace, real meaning, and love, we have to undertake this sacred work of self-discovery.
