Despite the many differences that seem to exist between peoples the world over — regardless of culture, tradition, environment, or heredity — there is but one seeker, one search, and one sacred object of our desire. The celestial source of this sacred being doesn’t just live within us… we are, in fact, one with it.
Behold but One in all things; it is the second that leads you astray.
My friends, how desperately do we need to be loved and to love. Love is something you and I must have. We must have it because our spirit feeds upon it. We must have it because without it we become weak and faint. Without love our self-esteem weakens. Without it our courage fails. Without love we can no longer look out confidently at the world. We turn inward and begin to feed upon our own personalities, and little by little we destroy ourselves. With it we are creating. With it we march tirelessly. With it, and with it alone, we are able to sacrifice for others.
No matter where you place it, gold is gold.
Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch… you may kick it about all day, like a football, and it will be round and full at evening.
In the same degree in which a man’s mind is nearer to freedom from all passion, in the same degree also is it nearer to strength.
I call that mind free which is not passively framed by outward circumstances, which is not swept away by the torrent of events, which is not the creature of accidental impulse, but which bends events to its own improvement, and acts from an inward spring, from immutable principles which is has deliberately espoused.
To do rightly by the cosmos depends on timing: right doing, right being at the right time and place. This right guidance, found in every heart, finds its source in the universal Heart. This rightness is ultimate good, ultimate happiness and joy. The joy comes naturally to and through a life lived in moment-by-moment contact with the truth behind all nature, for its own sake and not for anything else.
I have given you the refreshing drink called the perception of truth, and he who drinks of it becomes free from excitement, passion, and wrong-doing.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.
Truth makes all things plain.
As thou urgest justice, be assured
Thou shalt have justice, more than thou desiresth.
Rely on principles.
If circumstances lead me, I will find
Where truth is hid, though it were hid indeed
Within the centre.
The criterion of true beauty is that it increases on examination; of false, that it lessens.
Men esteem Truth remote, in the outskirts of the system, behind the farthest star, before Adam and after the last man. In eternity there is indeed something true and sublime. But all these times and places and occasions are now and here. God Himself culminates in the present moment, and will never be more divine in the lapse of all ages.
Let a man but realize that the aim of his life is the fulfillment of God’s law, and that law will replace all other laws for him, and he will give it his sole allegiance, so that by that very allegiance every human law will lose all binding and controlling power in his eyes.
I must be myself. I cannot break myself any longer for you, or you. If you can love me for what I am, we shall be the happier. If you cannot… I will not hurt you and myself by hypocritical attentions. If you are true, but not in the same truth with me, cleave to your own companions; I will seek my own. I do this not selfishly but humbly and truly. It is alike your interest, and mine, and all men’s, however long we have dwelt in lies, to live in truth. Does this sound harsh today? You will soon love what is dictated by your nature as well as mine, and if we follow the truth it will bring us out safe at last.
For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
Keep the imagination sane — that is one of the truest conditions of communion with heaven.
The perception of the sun by an astronomer and by a scientist is far inferior to the seeing of the invisible God and it is inferior to the knowledge that comes from God.
Love is not thinking, but being.
The intentness of the soul on the pure Eternal — that is right meditation. It is not the indulgence in fanciful thinking.
Out of difficulties grow miracles.
The deepest and most passionate love is that which survives the extinction of esteem.
Impermanent are all component things… nothing comes into existence but there is the seeds of its own dissolution.
